Piercing at Esco: How it All Started

When Obie started his business back in 2000, it was ONLY tattoos. Piercing wasn’t even an active interest for Obie yet, and he certainly didn’t want to include it in his business, as he hadn’t had any training or experience in the field. The door first opened up for him when he attended the first ever San Diego’s Body Art Expo at the Del Mar Fair Grounds. Next to his booth, stood a booth shared by owner of Ink Fixx Tattoo Aftercare Phil, and Iguana, a well known piercer from Miami, FL with around 15 years of experience behind him.

That weekend in Del Mar, Obie became great friends with Iguana and Phil and they found ways to help promote each other’s business that weekend, sending referrals for tattoos to Obie, referrals for piercings to Iguana, and referrals for aftercare to Phil. By Sunday, the last day of the show, Iguana asked Obie if he could do a guest spot at his shop, Escondido Body Art. That was the spark that ignited the fire inside Obie to include body piercing in his business. He stayed for the entire week training Obie one-on-one at his shop. But Obie was still not ready.  For the next several years, Obie began participating in more and more Tattoo Expos, sometimes every month, and Iguana would be there at every show, sharing a booth with him, and Obie would interrupt his tattoo session to watch him perform a piercing each time. So for those weekends and the few days following, Iguana stayed to share with Obie the piercing knowledge he would ultimately come to use for his shop.
Through Iguana, Obie met Shawn O’Hare. Iguana wanted to get some implants in his head, so one day after a show, they headed to Shawn’s place.

Obie was so impressed to watch Shawn pierce and insert implants, that he knew he would also develop a lasting friendship with him. He looked up to his two piercing mentors with great respect and appreciation.
So Obie began performing basic piercings at the Esco shop, with the exception of tongue piercings. For some reason he was never brave enough, even though he was taught by two great masters of the trade.  One day in Denver, Co at a Body Art Expo, Shawn had a guest spot where he performed a tongue splitting. Obie was Shawn assistant for the procedure, stopping the bleeding with gauze and pressure. He watched the entire procedure from beginning to end and after experiencing that up close, a simple tongue piercing was no problem! Obie continued to perform all basic piercings in his shop and even began including dermal anchors. However, for anything more bizarre than that, Obie would refer customers over to Shawn’s parlors: High Class Tattoo Studio, and High Class Piercing School.

In January of 2009, Obie expanded to a second shop: Vista Body Art, and in the years since, Obie has gone on from student to teacher, passing on piercing knowledge and techniques to his artists. So if you are looking to get any basic piercing, let the boys of Escondido Body Art show you a variety of styles and jewelry that might fit your interest, and remember: you have the confidence of knowing that they have been taught by the very best!

Growth:
In addition to the original groups who engaged in piercing, a number of subcultures embrace the practice. The internet has contributed enormously to the escalation of piercings. Millions of people around the world every day share information and photos of piercings with their friends and for educational purposes. This has helped to connect the public with the industry directly.
One great advantage of our modern society is how acceptable body modifications have become. Body piercing has been a part of our world for millennia, and now, though it is still not considered entirely mainstream, virtually everyone is aware of the concept.
The Piercing Gun:
One option that is available in other stores (for example, in the mall) is the use of a piercing gun.  The gun forces a pointy earring through the skin, which can cause a great deal of trauma to the tissue and discomfort. Unfortunately, these guns cause microscopic blood particles to become airborne and contaminate the inside of the machine, which comes into contact with the next client’s tissue, and the guns cannot be sterilized. Also, the machines are not adjustable, so they cannot be used on any other body part than the ears. However, the use of a piercing gun is highly inadvisable, even for ears, as no machine can replace the expertise and precision that only a trained piercer can provide. Also, the needles used in proper piercing parlors, are sterilized and one time use only, and the jewelry that is provided, is also sterilized and surgical steel, optimal for the healing process. Alternate metals can be order in the case of an allergy.
